Continued Excellence

Advanced Training & Clinical Leadership

I trained in Birmingham and have continued my education through advanced postgraduate training in both the UK and internationally, including surgical leadership training at Harvard Medical School.

Today, I divide my time between specialist clinical practice, teaching, research, leadership and my role within Birmingham Dental Hospital’s Department of Periodontology.

Meet Mark Tangri

Many of the patients who come to see me have already been through a difficult journey. Some are living with advanced gum disease, failing implants or complex restorative problems. Others have experienced unsuccessful treatment elsewhere or have reached a point where anxiety has become a significant barrier to receiving care.

My role is not simply to provide treatment. It is to provide clarity.

I believe patients deserve to understand their condition, their options and the likely long-term outcomes before making decisions about their health. Every treatment plan I create is designed around achieving lasting health, function and stability while ensuring patients feel informed, supported and confident throughout the process.

My Clinical Focus

Today, my clinical work is focused on periodontitis and peri-implant disease management, complex oral rehabilitation using dental implants, hard and soft tissue reconstruction, and conscious sedation.

Over the past 20 years, I have personally provided conscious sedation for more than 8,000 patients, helping individuals who may otherwise have struggled to access the care they need. Sedation remains an important part of my practice because I understand how powerful anxiety can be, and how transformative the right support can be.

My work often involves managing advanced cases where multiple disciplines intersect, requiring careful diagnosis, meticulous planning and a long-term perspective. Whether I am managing advanced periodontal disease, rebuilding lost bone and soft tissues, or restoring a patient’s ability to eat, smile and live confidently again, my objective remains the same: to deliver outcomes that are healthy, predictable and maintainable over the long term.

core principals

A Whole-Person Approach

One of the core principles that guides everything I do is that the mouth is not separate from the body.

Oral health influences confidence, function, inflammation, nutrition and overall wellbeing. For that reason, I have always believed in treating the whole person rather than focusing solely on individual teeth or procedures.

Many of the conditions I treat have implications far beyond the mouth. Gum disease has well-established links with systemic health, while tooth loss can affect confidence, social interaction, nutrition and quality of life. Understanding those wider connections allows me to provide care that is centred around the individual rather than simply addressing isolated clinical problems.

Teaching, Research and Leadership

Alongside clinical practice, I am deeply committed to education and research. I teach and mentor junior consultants, specialist registrars, postgraduate dentists and undergraduate dental students within my areas of clinical expertise. I also lecture on leadership and professional development for academic institutions and healthcare organisations.

Our practice actively undertakes clinical research focused on the relationship between periodontal disease and systemic health, mucogingival surgical therapies, and advanced hard tissue grafting techniques used in oral reconstruction.

Alongside this work, I am building a structured research programme focused on long-term full-arch rehabilitation outcomes, maintenance burden, prosthetic complications, patient-reported outcome measures and sedation science. My goal is not only to deliver excellent treatment today, but to contribute to a stronger evidence base that improves patient care for years to come.

I believe that continual learning, rigorous research and evidence-based innovation are essential to delivering the highest standard of patient care.

Beyond Dentistry: Building the Future of Healthcare

While dentistry remains at the heart of my professional life, I have always been interested in a bigger question: how can healthcare become more predictive, preventative and personalised?

Alongside my clinical work, I lead the broader NanoHealth mission—a translational healthcare innovation programme focused on exploring the future of healthcare through biosensors, nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, predictive health systems and emerging medical technologies.

My interest in this area comes from a belief that the future of healthcare will depend upon earlier diagnosis, better prediction of disease, personalised interventions and technologies that help clinicians make more informed decisions. As medicine and technology continue to converge, opportunities are emerging to identify disease earlier, monitor health more accurately and improve outcomes at both an individual and population level.

Through NanoHealth, I hope to contribute to that future by helping bridge the gap between clinical practice, scientific research and healthcare innovation. Although much of this work extends beyond dentistry, it is driven by the same principle that guides every aspect of my clinical practice: improving people’s health, wellbeing and quality of life through thoughtful, evidence-based care.

Expert Witness Work

I also provide expert witness reports for legal proceedings involving dental negligence and personal injury claims. This work demands objectivity, precision and balanced judgement—qualities that are equally important within clinical practice. My reports are written to be concise, impartial and evidence-based, helping courts and legal teams understand complex clinical issues clearly and accurately.

Leadership and Practice Development

I am proud to lead a growing specialist team and a practice that welcomes referrals from a wide range of healthcare professionals. Our referrers include consultant physicians, specialist dentists, orthodontists, dental hygienists, therapists, general dental practitioners and allied healthcare professionals who trust us to provide thoughtful assessment and high-quality care for their patients.

Building and supporting a multidisciplinary team is something I greatly enjoy. I believe the best outcomes are achieved when talented people work collaboratively, share expertise and remain focused on delivering exceptional patient experiences.

Beyond Work

Away from dentistry, I am a husband and father to five children. Family remains the most important part of my life and provides the perspective that shapes how I care for my patients. It reminds me that behind every diagnosis is a person, a family and a story. In the limited spare time that remains, I enjoy reading, gardening and writing poetry.

My Commitment To Every Patient

Whether your treatment is straightforward or highly complex, my commitment is the same. I will take the time to listen carefully, assess thoroughly and explain honestly. I will always prioritise what is in your best long-term interests and provide recommendations based on evidence, experience and careful clinical judgement.

My philosophy is simple: treat the whole person, not just the mouth. When health, function and confidence are restored together, the results are often life-changing.

If you choose to place your trust in me and my team, you can expect thoughtful advice, meticulous care and a commitment to achieving the best possible outcome for your long-term health and wellbeing.
